Overview

Zip Locker is a password-protected file compression and extraction utility for macOS. This policy explains what data the app does and does not collect.

Short version: Zip Locker does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data. Everything happens locally on your Mac.

Data Collection

Zip Locker does not collect:

  • Personal information of any kind
  • Usage analytics or crash reports
  • Location data
  • Device identifiers
  • Any information that leaves your computer

Data Stored Locally on Your Mac

Zip Locker stores the following information only on your Mac:

Compression History (if enabled by you in Settings):

  • Source file paths
  • Output ZIP file paths
  • Compression dates and file sizes
  • Stored at ~/Library/Application Support/ZipLocker/history.json — this file never contains passwords

Archive Passwords (if history is enabled):

  • Stored in the macOS Keychain, encrypted by the operating system
  • Never written to plain-text files
  • Deleted from the Keychain when you delete the matching history entry or clear all history

App Settings:

  • Default output folder preference (stored using a macOS security-scoped bookmark)
  • History on/off toggle state

Security Notes

  • Passwords are stored in the macOS Keychain — encrypted by macOS and locked whenever your Mac is locked
  • Passwords copied to the clipboard are automatically cleared after 60 seconds
  • You can disable history at any time in Settings to prevent password storage entirely
  • You can clear all history (including Keychain passwords) at any time in Settings

Data Transmission

Zip Locker does not connect to the internet, send data to remote servers, or communicate with any third-party service. The app operates entirely offline.

Third-Party Components

Zip Locker uses SSZipArchive (MIT licensed, open source) for AES-256 ZIP encryption. This library operates entirely on your device and does not collect or transmit any data.

File Access

Zip Locker operates under macOS App Sandbox and can only access files you explicitly choose via the standard macOS open and save dialogs. It cannot access files or folders without your permission.

Children’s Privacy

Zip Locker does not collect any data from anyone, including children under 13.

Data Deletion

You control all data stored by Zip Locker:

  • Delete individual entries: History → entry → Delete (also removes that entry’s Keychain password)
  • Clear all history: Settings → History → Clear All History (also removes all Zip Locker Keychain passwords)
  • Disable history entirely: Settings → toggle off Save Compression History
  • Complete removal: Delete the app and ~/Library/Application Support/ZipLocker/. Any remaining Zip Locker passwords can be removed with Keychain Access (search for “ZipLocker”)

Technical Details

Zip Locker creates password-protected ZIP files using AES-256 encryption — an industry-standard, publicly available algorithm. Encryption, decryption, and compression occur entirely on your device. No encryption keys or passwords are transmitted anywhere.

Note: AES-encrypted archives require Zip Locker, 7-Zip, Keka, WinRAR, or a similar tool to open — macOS Archive Utility and Windows Explorer do not support AES zip decryption.

Changes to This Policy

If this policy changes in a future version of the app, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a revised date and noted in the App Store release notes.
